Caixapetrer was founded on 7th May 1959 as a credit cooperative, although its first branch opened in 1963 coinciding with the integration of assets and liabilities from the Credit Section of Sindicato Agrícola y Caja Rural de Ahorros y Préstamos de Petrer, which dated back to 1909. The beginnings and early development of its activity as a credit entity in the towns of Petrer and Elda coincided with the development of the footwear and leather industries. In the 60s and 70s, these sectors were characterised by the strength of many family-owned artisan workshops dedicated to footwear manufacturing, and from the 80s onwards these became semi-artisan companies which demanded high levels of labour and provided employment to entire families who moved here from other provinces. Hence, with this same dedication to service, with which the former Sindicato Agrícola y Caja Rural looked after its farmers in the past, over the past 50 years, Caixapetrer has been able to adapt and respond to the new economic and social reality of the surrounding area.
